Wallace Reed Cowan, Sr. 84, longtime Seminole and Maud resident, died Sunday, July 27, 2014 in Maud, Oklahoma. Wallace was born on April 27, 1930 in Bowlegs, Oklahoma to Myrtle Inez (Cobb) and Walter Reed Cowan. Wallace lived in the Seminole area all his life, he graduated from Gypsy High School in 1947, and later joined the U.S. Army serving his country from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. Wallace was a member of the Church of Christ at Maud, Oklahoma. He loved to read old western novels, but his favorite writer was Zane Grey. Wallace worked and later owned the Green Spray Grocery Store located on State Street where “Richards” is located currently; Wallace was there for 17 years. He also worked one year at O’Daniel’s Grocery in Maud, Oklahoma and in 1974 started his career in the Seminole oilfields. He was a roustabout for Bill Morris Tank Service for many years and then became an independent contract oilfield pumper for area oil producers. His knowledge and dependability made him very well respected in the Seminole oilfields. He married Matilda Maxine Coker on August 6, 1952 in Seminole, Oklahoma and she preceded him in death on August 9, 2007. Wallace is survived by his son Wallace Reed “Wally” Cowan Jr. of Maud, Oklahoma, his daughter WaDean Margarita Cowan of Maud, Oklahoma, his brother Dorval Cowan and his wife Joan of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and his sister Mary Keys of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; his grandchildren D’Nay Rowsey and her husband Derek of Ada, Oklahoma, Danielle Wells and her husband Robert of Dickson, Oklahoma and Lori Brewer and her husband Bryan of Maud, Oklahoma, John Grove and Brandi Proffitt of Maud, Oklahoma; great grandchildren Desiree Paterson and Auston Clayborn of Ada, Oklahoma, Emily Hamilton and Erin Wells of Dickson, Oklahoma, Colton and Hailee Grove of Maud, Oklahoma, Devin and Braxton Brewer of Maud, Oklahoma and a great-great-grandchild Easton Clayborn; also by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Majel Carpitcha, Anne Kemp, Tony Costello and wife Mary, Russell Wilson, Betty Feigel and her husband Steve. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M., Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Frank Brewer officiating. Burial will follow at the Coker FamilyCemetery near Maud, Oklahoma. Military honors will be provided following the Funeral Service, by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Casket bearers will be John Grove, Colton Grove, Robert Wells, Derek Rowsey, Brian Brewer and Devin Brewer. Honorary bearers will be Auston Claborn, Albert Flesher and his many oilfield colleagues.
