Sylvester "Chick" Tiger

Sylvester “Chick” Tiger, 84 year-old, Wewoka, Oklahoma resident died at his home Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Chick was born August 7, 1928 to Jesse and Mindy (Jones) Tiger in Seminole County, Oklahoma.  In 1938 the family moved to Altus, Oklahoma where Chick graduated from Altus High School.  He went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard where he earned an Honorable discharge.  Chick then furthered his education attending Hardin-Simmons College in Abilene, Texas on a football scholarship and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1954.  He received his Masters degree in Education from the University of Oklahoma in 1967. Chick spent many years teaching and coaching in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and California.  In 1964 he moved his mom and dad back to Maud, Oklahoma where he coached his favorite Maud football team.  He then moved to Indio, California where he coached football and golf.  He married his wife Mary and they had a daughter Susan before returning to Oklahoma in 1979. In his earlier years Chick loved to fish, hunt, and play golf.  He was a fan of all sports.  He was the grill-master of “Chick’s 5 Star Hamburgers” in Seminole, Oklahoma. Chick was a member of Achena Indian Presbyterian Church where he was baptized as an infant.  Later he became an elder of the Church.  He was also a proud member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. The body will be taken to Achena Presbyterian Church in Maud on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. and wake services will be held at 7:00 p.m. that evening.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2012 at Achena Indian Presbyterian Church in Maud with Rev. Dorsey Nero and Elder Ricky Harjo officiating the service.  Interment will follow at Achena Church Cemetery. Chick is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Mindy Tiger and by one son, Michael Tiger. He is survived by his wife, Mary Tiger of the home, son, Chris and his wife Peggy of Indio, California, daughter Susan Tiger of the home, son Ryan Tiger of Pine Knot, Kentucky, daughter-in-law, Jeana of Seminole, Oklahoma, two grandchildren Michael, Noelle, and Jordan, sister, Lucille of Seminole, Oklahoma, brother, Nolan of El Reno, Oklahoma, and aunt, Dorothy Harjo of Seminole, Oklahoma along with several nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends. Casket bearers will be his 1964 season Maud football team.  Honorary bearers will be Achena Church elders. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
