Stu Phillips

Stuart Chaney "Stu" Phillips, 55, of Seminole, died on Dec. 30, 2018, at Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born Oct. 13, 1963, in Seminole to Nancy (Chaney) and Theodore “Ted” Morton Phillips. He graduated from Seminole High School and attended East Central University in Ada and the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He worked most of his life in his family’s newspaper business, The Seminole Producer, the third generation to do so. He started in the circulation department and worked his way up to editor and publisher. The chain also includes the Wewoka Times and the Konawa Leader. As a newspaper publisher, Phillips worked alongside city fathers, city officials and city councilmen to make good things happen in his community. He served on the Seminole Industrial Foundation and the Seminole Planning Commission. He was a founding member of the Seminole Historical Society and the Oklahoma Oil Museum. He was a long-time member of the Rotary Club and a member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving one term as president. He loved the University of Oklahoma, woodworking, leatherworking, fishing and metalcraft. He married Cheryl A. Phillips on Jan. 22, 1995, beside a pond on their homesite north of Seminole on a beautiful snowy day. She survives him, of the home. Other survivors include his son, Cody Ray Phillips of Hutchinson, Kans.; his daughter, Darlene F. Carbitcher and Ian M. King, of Norman; one brother, Ted Steven Phillips, and his wife, Frances Marie Phillips, of Reston, Va.; nephews, Steven Andrew and John Charles Phillips, both of Reston; granddaughter Kailee Beth Feken, Seminole; great-granddaughter Addalyn Marie Cofer, Seminole; and a special family member, Michael Zane Feken of Seminole. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents. Because of his love for his Yorkies, Leilei and Cricket, and his support of the Seminole animal shelter, a no-kill facility, Phillips’ family asked that any memorial donations be sent to the Seminole Humane Society.
