Smith Dewey John

September 19, 1920 — December 13, 2013

Dewey John Smith, 93 year-old Maud, Oklahoma resident passed from this life on Friday, December 13, 2013 at his home in Maud.  He was born September 19, 1920 in Skaggs City, Oklahoma to parents, D.O. Smith and Edna May (Tosh) Smith. As a child Dewey John was diagnosed with the polio disease, and no one thought he would survive through his adolescent years.  Proving everyone wrong with his strength and determination he overcame the odds.  Although bound to wear leg braces all of his years he was of the mindset that he wasn’t handicap.  If his grandkids ever got out of line he would swat them with his crutch or if they tried to out run them he would rope them. Dewey John graduated from Harjo High School in 1937.  He then attended Drowns Business School in Oklahoma City.  He later meet and married the love of his life, Jerrie Ruth Pounds.  On January 10, 1942 the couple were married in Okemah, Oklahoma.  Sadly she preceded him in death on December 26, 2006 after 64 years of marriage. Dewey John worked many years managing Copeland’s Grocery in Saint Louis, Oklahoma in earlier years.  He then worked as a butcher at Copeland’s IGA in Maud, Oklahoma before continuing with the stores new owner Furman Huff at Furman’s Redbud Grocery in Maud. Throughout the years, Dewey John had always been known as quiet a prankster; shooting customers with paper wads and rubber bands all in fun.  He always loved a good laugh; he loved to fish and was one of the biggest OSU fans you would ever meet teasing, Harold Swarb and Albert Flesher about how OU didn’t stand a chance against his POKES. He also loved family dinners and spending time with his family whom he loved dearly. Dewey John leaves to remember his upbeat nature and strong will to their only daughter, Topsey and son-in-law, Albert Flesher of Maud, Oklahoma; one brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Peg Smith of Minnesota; two grandchildren, John Flesher and his wife Jamie Flesher, and Kerry (Flesher) Bruce and her companion Tommy Little all of Maud; 8 great-grandchildren, Ginger Flesher, Brandi Mullican, Mac Mullican and his wife Nicole, John Dee Flesher, Blake Bruce, Raven Bruce, Hunter Bruce and Haylee Jo Flesher; 6 great great-grandchildren, Kayson and Ashton Mullican, Kye Bradely, Christian, Nicholas and Delilah; a very special friend, Phyllis Splawn of Prague, Oklahoma; and a host of other family and dear friends. Dewey John was preceded in death by his parents, Edna and D.O. Smith; his wife of 64 years Jerri Ruth Smith; and brother, Jack Smith. Memorial services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Trinity Baptist Church in Maud, Oklahoma with Billy Bruce officiating. Cremation services are under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home in Maud, Oklahoma 405-382-3456.
