Shirley Louise (Bateman) Smith, 71 Shirley Louise (Bateman) Smith, a long time Seminole resident passed away Saturday, March 11, 2017 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 71. Shirley was born November 17, 1945 in Seminole, Oklahoma to parents, Orville Bateman and Louise (Self) Bateman. Shirley was a member of First Baptist Church, was employed at My-T-Quick Convenience Store, and was in retail sales at J.C. Penney, but her greatest joy was being a housewife and taking care of her family. Shirley enjoyed hobbies such as; gardening, fishing, cooking, and sewing. She was most comfortable in her moomoo and bare feet. Shirley loved to cook tamales, fried chicken and she was the best all around at frying fish. When you were at Shirley’s home she made sure you had plenty to eat. Shirley made candy every year at Christmas time. She was a collector of jars and she would fill each jar full of candy or cookies. The children or anyone else could pick one each day for a snack. Every Christmas she would make granny gowns for the girls and pajamas for the boys and they were allowed to open these gifts on Christmas Eve. She made quilts for many of her family members and friends. She made a large quilt from all the scraps of material and gave to Brent and Brenda. There are so many memories of all the clothes she made. She crocheted many throws and doilies. She grew flowers of every kind in her garden along with many vegetables which she canned and gave away. Shirley is survived by one son, Brent Dentler of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Brenda Fouquet and her husband, Joseph of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; three brothers, Richard Bateman and his wife Vickie of Seminole, Oklahoma, Melvin Bateman and his wife Gail of Arizona, John Bateman of Shawnee, Oklahoma; four grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Louise Bateman and one son, Wendell Bateman. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2017 at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole, Oklahoma with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating.
