Roy E. Hughes Sr.

October 30, 1919 — January 23, 2021

Roy Hughes Sr. passed away early Saturday morning, January 23, 2021, at home with his family at his bedside.

He was born in Ninnekah, Oklahoma, on October 30, 1919, to his parents, Amelia and Bob Hughes. He met the love his life Ethyl Ruby Fleming in Cisco, Texas and remained married to her for 63 years until her death in 2005.

Roy is survived by twin daughters, Carolyn Duncan and Marilyn Siracusa and his son Roy Hughes Jr. and wife JoAnn Gray Hughes. He had four grandchildren Jeff Duncan, Tracy Duncan and wife Christy Duncan, Christi Gurley and husband Shane Gurley, Lindsay Jones and husband Jeremy Jones. His 7 great grandchildren include Jayci Jones, Addison Gurley, Josephine Duncan, William Duncan, Emily Duncan, Hailey Duncan and Lauren Duncan.

Roy Hughes was a well-respected Christian man who was the last survivor of his 12 other brothers and sisters. His devotion to his family and faith was well known by all who met and knew him.

Roy was proud of his military service, enlisting in the National Guard that was soon activated in 1940. After training at several U.S. military bases they landed on the beaches of Sicily. At one point Roy spent three months and twenty-one days in a fox hole waiting for ammunition and supplies to reach their unit. He was awarded The American Service Defense Medal; E A M E Campaign Medal with 6 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.

After military service, he eventually moved his family to Artesia, New Mexico where he worked and retired at Central Valley Electric. In Artesia, he was an active Boy Scout leader, baseball coach and member of the Assembly of God Church. Roy’s favorite past time was fishing. For many years Roy and his fishing buddy, Sid Green were known as Kings of Catfish at Lake Texoma.

Funeral services for Roy Hughes Sr. will be held on Friday, January 29, 2021, at 10:30 AM at Assembly of God Church in Konawa, OK with Pastor Pete Heaton officiating.  Burial will follow at Vamoosa Cemetery.  Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Konawa, OK.
