Robert “Butch” Hill, 65, Seminole resident, died Tuesday, September 2, 2014 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. Robert was born on November 24, 1948 in Birmingham, Alabama and raised by O’Dell (Smith) Hill and John Cecil Hill. Robert grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi and attended college at Hinds Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Robert earned his Masters degree from Pittsburg State University. He then earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Tulsa. His wife, Mary Ann, was in his Freshmen Composition class in 1973 at Tulsa University; they married in 1976. Robert played drums with Bob Baker and Scott Baker in the Baker Brothers Band from 1977 through 1989. He moved to Seminole in 1990 after accepting a position teaching English at Seminole State College. Robert taught at Seminole State College from 1990 to 2000 and at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma from 2000 to 2007. He retired from East Central University in 2007. Robert also played drums with Randy Elston’s band, Cross-eyed Jack, from 2001 to 2010. Last year Robert joined Randy’s new band, ARe Randal Blues. They played 7 jobs recently, and had more shows scheduled. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann Hill of Seminole, Oklahoma. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, with a reception following in the funeral home’s reception room.
