Richard Vernon Spencer, 94, lifelong Seminole resident died Saturday, February 16, 2013, in Seminole. Vernon was born, September 24, 1918 at the top of the hill on Reid Street in Seminole to Jones Lynn and Maude (Barton) Spencer. his grandparents D.C. and Phonie Barton raised Vernon. Vernon married Maxine Beal in Sulphur, Oklahoma on May 11, 1941; she preceded him in death on May 22, 1997. Vernon served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II as a sergeant in the 3630 Quartermaster Truck Company. He served during the war campaigns in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe and received the World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, American Theater Ribbon and the European Theater Ribbon with three bronze stars. After the service, Vernon worked as a shop foreman for Chemical Process Company and later B.J. Hughes. After retiring from B.J. Hughes he worked as an oilfield truck driver for Joe Tolbert Trucking Company in Seminole. Vernon loved and enjoyed being with his family, watching the “Cubbies” Chicago Cubs baseball, eating Snickers candy bars and most of all loved Christmas. Vernon is survived by his daughter, Sylvia Susie Newman of Seminole, Oklahoma and his son Richard Spencer and his wife Janet of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; his grandsons David Perry and his wife Melissa, Daryle Spencer and his wife Brijette, and Daryn Spencer; great-grandchildren Maddie Perry, Zach Perry, Justin Spencer and Allison Spencer. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Casket bearers will be David Perry, Daryle Spencer, Daryn Spencer, Scott Douthit, Bobbie Douthit and John Hill.
