Retna Mae Harjo

Retna “Hoktie” Mae Harjo, 71 year old lifelong Shawnee and Oklahoma City resident, passed from this life on Monday, July 31, 2017, at Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Retna was born on May 3, 1946 in Hanna, Oklahoma at Hillabee Church ground to parents Mary White (Foster) and Charlie Harjo. Retna worked as a presser for Manhattan Cleaner dry cleaning store in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and then moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1989.  She loved animals, cared for wild birds, lived with six dogs and one being her favorite called “Bighead”, and enjoyed playing bingo, going to the casino, drawing, and her handwriting was very pretty. She is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Geraldine and Ruben Dunn of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and Mary Wood of Shawnee, Oklahoma.  One brother, Herbert James Harjo and sister-in-law, Valma of Mayetta, Kansas.  Special friend, Geneva Pewewardy of Shawnee, Oklahoma, and special nephew, Nathan Dorsey. She was preceded in death by both parents, Mary White (Foster) and Charlie Harjo,and 1 brother, Philip Joseph Harjo. Retna will be taken to Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church, southwest of Wewoka, Oklahoma, on Thursday, August 3 at 4:00 p.m. for a wake  service which will be held at the church beginning at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Hawkins Cemetery just west of the church , southwest of Wewoka, Oklahoma. Casket bearers will be Bill “Skip” Foster, Herman Foster, Matthew Foster, Anthony Harjo and Steve Dorsey. Honorary bearers will be George Harjo, Carl Wood, Crow, Nathan Dorsey. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
