Norma Jean Phillips, 83, longtime Seminole resident, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018 in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Norma Jean was born May 3, 1934 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Norman Leon Melton and Rosa Mae (Driskill) Melton. Norma Jean was a retired special education teacher for over 20 years at Paden Public Schools. She was a mentor to her students and other classmates while going to college. She attended Seminole State College and later graduated from East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma with a bachelor’s degree in education. Norma Jean had worked in her earlier days assisting her husband as his bookkeeper in their family business, then at Johnny Mayfield Egg Farm and later at the Ramada Inn in Seminole as a housekeeper. She was a foster mom and a caregiver for several years. She loved camping, gardening, scary movies, her cats, going to the lake, visiting Branson, being with and taking care of her husband, Marshall, and was an avid reader. Norma Jean married Marshall Francis Phillips on January 19, 1952 he preceded her in death in 2014. Norma Jean is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Cindy Phillips of Seminole, Oklahoma, daughter and son-in-law, Karen Frances and Dr. Roy Scott of Laurel , Maryland, her brother, Arnold Melton of Globe, Arizona, her sister Wanda Pinkerton and her husband Don of Seminole, Oklahoma, her grandchildren Shanna Phillips Wells and her husband Henry, Ashlee Phillips Allen, Brenna Phillips Anderson and her husband Kevin, Corey Scott, Hollee Houck Myrick and her husband Matt, Wesley Phillips and Brandon Scott, her great grandchildren; Alexander Anderson, Lance Anderson, Quentin Anderson, Lillian Phillips, Austin Phillips, Bryce Hair, Angelnize Myrick, Emalee Myrick, Kaydee Myrick, Kolby Johnson and Jaxson Wilcox. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marshall Phillips, her daughter Kathy Ryan, who died in 1998 and brothers Donald Melton and Melvin Leon Melton. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery, north of Seminole. Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
