Nona James

Nona Faye James, longtime Seminole, Oklahoma resident, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2018 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Nona was born August 13, 1939 in Konawa, Oklahoma  to Fred S. Snell  and Dora G. (Mosley) Snell.  Nona graduated from Bowlegs High School in 1957 and then attended East Central University, Oklahoma Baptist University and Seminole State College. Nona married Vernon James on June 25, 1965 at the First Assembly of God Church in Seminole. They were married for 51 years. Sadly, Vernon passed away on July 20, 2016. Nona was involved in her church as a Sunday School teacher, Missionette’s director and sang in the choir. She was involved in the Seminole BPW for over 25 years, having served three terms as president and one term as district director. She was named local club woman of the year in 1979-80 and district woman of the year in 1984-85. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, serving one term as president. She was a member of the Seminole Chamber of Commerce and served as vice-president. She was named to Who’s Who of American Women in 1981-82 and Personalities of the South Award in 1979-80. Nona was a licensed insurance agent for over 50 years. She and her husband owned Dacus Insurance for two years before selling to Sullivan-Dollar in 1993. She continued working there until she retired. She didn’t like the word “retirement”. She loved working, staying busy, reading and shopping. Nona is survived by her godchildren: Melissa Branson, Todd Hallmark and Ashley Seyfert, sisters; Johnnie  Hailey of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma  and Mary Seyfert of Seminole, Oklahoma, special nieces; Judy Hailey, Dallas, Texas, Patty Hallmark and her husband Mickey, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, special nephew; Jeff Seyfert, special friend, Shirley Watson, nephews; Jack Boyd, Jerry Boyd, Wayne Snell, William Snell and Ron Bright, nieces; Susan Halstead, Pat McNatt and Diana Blassingame. Nona was preceded in death by: her husband Vernon, her parents, Rev. & Mrs. Fred Snell, sisters, Helen Boyd and Pat Whitt, brother Bill Snell, brothers-in-law, Ed Hailey and Carl Seyfert and two sisters who died in infancy. Nona’s family will receive visitors at Swearingen Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 12, 2018. Funeral  services are planned for 10:00 A.M. , Friday, April 13 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel  in Seminole, Oklahoma.  Roy Robertson and  Jack Medlock will officiate the service. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole, Oklahoma. Casket bearers will be Don Pinkerton, Corey Crabtree, Ray Watson, Dennis Wade, Todd Hallmark and Alan Branson. Honorary bearers will be Jack Boyd, Jerry Boyd, Ron Bright, Kenneth Snell and William Snell. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
