Melvin Arnold Long, 85, life long Maud, Oklahoma resident died, Saturday, June 9, 2012. Melvin has been a resident of Maud for over 70 years. Melvin was born January 13, 1927 in Nuyaka, Oklahoma near Okemah, Oklahoma to Delmer and Muriel (Baird) Long. Melvin was married to Virginia (Garrison) Long on December 24, 1953 in St. Louis, Oklahoma; sadly she preceded him in death on November 7, 2002. Melvin was a dedicated and faithful member of the Tecumseh Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, his baptism date was January 1, 1943. Melvin was a very talented man. His love for music led him to be an accomplished musician being able to play the fiddle and guitar and even writing songs. He was also a square dance caller. Melvin and his wife Virginia opened “ Long’s Need Mor Shoe Business” in 1970 and operated that until 1984, prior to that he owned Long’s Feed and Seed from 1967 to 1970. Melvin’s real passion and occupation was a “ Cowboy.” He worked on ranches, working horses and cattle. Melvin was a longtime dedicated member of the Maud Round-up club and Rodeo, he competed in various rodeos professionally and was the announcer for the Maud Rodeo for many years. He was a lifetime member of the PRCA and the USTRC. Melvin had also done horseshoeing work and had worked for several years for O’Daniel Mud Service in Maud, Oklahoma in the area oilfields. Two nephews; George McGill of Amarillo, Texas and Roland McGill of Panhandle, Texas and a niece Marilyn Christian of Shreveport, Louisiana, survive Melvin Funeral services are planned for 10:00 A.M., Monday, June 11, 2012 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma. Burial will follow in Cummings Cemetery in Maud, Oklahoma. Philip Scarbrough will officiate at the service. Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
