Melvin Eugene Hargis, 81, lifelong Seminole, Oklahoma resident died, Saturday, March 15, 2014 at his home in Seminole. Melvin was born on July 2, 1932 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Mamie Louise (Close) Hargis and Clarence Otis Hargis. Melvin grew up in Seminole, attended Seminole Public Schools and graduated from Seminole High School in the class of 1952. Melvin served his country in the U. S. Army and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tecumseh, Oklahoma and was formerly a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Seminole, Oklahoma, in which he helped build the church in his younger years. Melvin was a carpenter, a well known cabinet maker, and worked with his father, Clarence Hargis, in the Hargis Cabinet Shop on Strother Street, in Seminole for many years. Melvin retired in 1992. Melvin was a loving and devoted father and grandfather. Melvin loved tool collecting and was a member of the Midwest and Southwest Tool Collectors Association. Melvin married Nancy Etta (Littlejohn) Hargis on December 20, 1957 in Seminole, Oklahoma. Mrs. Hargis preceded him in death on November 25, 1993. Melvin is survived by his son; David Hargis of Seminole, Oklahoma, his two daughters, Jeanette Tiger of Seminole and Martha Howard and her husband Kirk of Allen, Texas; his brother, Charles Leslie Hargis, of Georgia, two sisters, Virginia Abbott of New Braunsfel, Texas and Nettie Zella Van Alstine of Kentucky. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Kursten Maye of Seminole, Nancy Ellen Maye of Seminole, Leah Nicole Howard and Adam McCarran Howard of Allen, Texas.Melvin is also survived by Kent Maye the father of his grandchildren, his sister-in-law Elizabeth Gunter of Seminole, Oklahoma, his special caregiver Sarah Clark, and special friends Thomas Jackson and Lee Ann Sysk. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother, John C. Hargis, and a sister, Mamie Louise Norris. Funeral services are planned for 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Phyllis Stutzman officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, east of Seminole, Oklahoma. Casket bearers will be Robert Leatherman, Thomas Jackson, Chuck Moose, Kirk Howard, J.P.
