Melford Leon Rumsey

Graveside services for Melford Leon Rumsey will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Little Cemetery with Chaplain Russell Vicars officiating. Melford passed away at his home in Seminole early Wednesday morning. Melford, who was a long time Seminole county resident, was born September 8, 1920 in Dustin, Oklahoma to Thomas Jefferson and Emma C. Rumsey. He graduated from Seminole High School and after working at Parks Drug and Double Cola, he joined the Navy, serving on the USS St. Louis during WWII. After an honorable discharge, he married Melba Lee Ellison on February 1, 1947. The couple opened a gas station on the corner on Highways 9 and 99, in Seminole and over the next 32 years owned may local businesses in the same spot including a grocery store and the Dairy Boy, where they were noted for their hamburgers andsoft serve ice cream. Melford is preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and one brother. He is survived by his wife Melba, a daughter, Kathryn Dawson of New Braunsfels, Texas, two sons, Tommy Rumsey of Shawnee, Oklahoma and Keith Rumsey of Eufaula, Oklahoma and grandaughters Jamelyn Burris, Megan Longest, Jillian Meek, Angie Bailey, Allyson Marsh, Brooke Rumsey, Shanna Lovelace, and grandson Chris Rumsey and 14 great grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers are Kent Dawson, Blake Andrews, Jirl McGinnis, Sam Marsh and Chris Rumsey. Honorary bearers will be Junior Hudson, Terry McGinnis and SPC Eric Meek, U.S. Army.
