Melba Jean (Wells) Burton

Melba Jean (Wells) Burton , age 79 and a resident of Asher, Oklahoma, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Norman Regional Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 30, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Asher, Oklahoma under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa, Oklahoma.  Rev. Randy Dirrim will officiate, and burial will follow at Wanette Cemetery.  Casket bearers are Jacob Burton, Zachary Burton, Elijah Burton, Eric Burton, Robert Paul Burton, and Harvey Burton.  Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29th at the funeral home in Konawa.

Melba was born the fourth child on March 12, 1942 in Liberty Oklahoma to James Riley Wells and Cora Bell (Romines) Wells.  She grew up in Roland, Oklahoma, and spent two years of her schooling in Woodville California.  She met Victor Burton in the 6th grade at Woodville.  She went back to California at the age of 18 to live with her brother, and met Victor again.  Seven months later they married.  She married Victor Carl Burton, Sr. November 29, 1960 in St. George, Utah because Victor was too young to get married in California.  They moved to Asher in 2012.  Melba was a member of the First Baptist Church of Asher, and she was an avid giver to Boystown and St. Jude.  Melba loved her family very much. Melba wanted her family and everyone else to “be ready when God calls your name”.

She is survived by six sons, Victor Carl Burton, Jr., and wife, Angela, Harvey Dale Burton, and wife, Shannon, Robert Dewayne Burton, and wife, Cindi, Douglas Leroy Burton, and wife Nicole, Chester Doyle Burton, and Chester Dale Burton; three brothers, Amon Wells, J.R. Wells, and Bob Wells; one sister, Sharon Wells; eight grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
