Maxine Roseanna (Coker) Trubshaw, Shawnee, Oklahoma, 80 years old, passed away January 4, 2017.Maxine was the 4th of 6 children born to Thomas and Frances (Walker) Coker on September 14, 1936 in Pawnee, Oklahoma. Maxine’s Indian heritage was Seminole from her father, Thomas Coker and Sac and Fox from her mother Frances Walker. By Sac and Fox tradition, her adopted mother was Christine Williamson of Cushing, Oklahoma. She was Thunder Clan and her Indian name was Shuck A Da. She was a descendent of London Coker and Chief Mah-ko-sah-toe. Maxine attended school at Pleasant Grove, west of Seminole, Oklahoma. She played basketball for the Comets where she made the basketball team when she was a freshman. She graduated high school in 1952 at the age of 16. She went on to attend St. Anthony’s nursing school; she was the first of her family to go on to higher education. Because of her husband’s job, she lived in Alaska, Colorado, Wisconsin and Illinois. She was an executive secretary to Colonels at the Military Airlift Command headquarters at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. She retired after serving over 2 decades. She returned to Oklahoma in 1983 and lived in Seminole and Shawnee. She served on the Health Commission and the Housing Authority for the Sac and Fox tribe and was an active member of the Elder’s Committee. In the 1950’s she was very good at dancing at the American Legion Hall in Seminole, went on to shake shells at stomp dances and Southern Cloth at pow wows. Along with her family, she played cards, and taught her grandchildren to play poker. Maxine is survived by her two daughters, Roseanna Preston of Meeker, Oklahoma and Johanna Smith and her husband Jimmy of Belleville, Illinois, one brother Walter Coker and his wife JoAnn of Shawnee, Oklahoma, three sisters, Thelma Coker, Mary McCormick and Dora Young all of Seminole, Oklahoma, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Thomas Coker, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma, with Rev. Dorsey Nero officiating. Following the services in the funeral home chapel, she will be taken to the Sac and Fox Tribal Grounds south of Stroud, Oklahoma for traditional tribal services Saturday at 6:00 P.M. Burial will take place at the Thomas Coker II Cemetery, west of Seminole, Oklahoma on Sunday morning, January 8, 2017. Casket bearers will be David Preston, Thomas Smith, Lucas Smith, Marshall Smith, Jimmy Smith and Joe Kinslow.
