Luci Deere Harjo, 62, longtime Seminole resident died at her home on Friday, June 18, 2010. Luci was born on July 18, 1947 to Jackson and Inez (Mitchell) Deere. Luci was a graduate of Seminole Public Schools and attended Seminole State College and also three years at the University of Oklahoma. Luci was a Seminole Nation General Council member for over 20 years and also served on the Seminole City Council for two years. She was a member of the Indian Nation Baptist Church in Seminole, she also was a member of the Seminole Democratic Women's League and Leadership Seminole. Luci was the J.O.M. coordinator, Title 4 program, for Seminole Public Schools and the Director of J.O.M. for the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. Luci was married to Jonah Harjo on January 31, 1964 in Seminole. Luci is survived by her husband Jonah Harjo of Seminole, Oklahoma, Five sons: John Harjo, Joey Harjo, Jeremy Harjo and Derek Harjo all of Seminole, Oklahoma and Mike Harjo of Wewoka, Oklahoma, one daughter Celestine Leader of Seminole, Oklahoma. A brother Larry Deere of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and two sisters Kathryn Deere of Tecumseh, Oklahoma and Joanne Gentry of Pine Bluff, Wyoming also survived her. Fourteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive her. Her parents preceded her in death. Funeral services are planned for 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole. Viewing will begin Saturday June 19, at her home at 900 W. Broadway Apt # 501 in Seminole, with a wake service on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 6-8 P.M. at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel. Bill Barnett and Bill Hobia will officiate the services, and casket bearers will be Eric Browning, Zack Ragan, Hunter Harjo, Robert Deere, Jamie Ray Deere and Forrest Atkins. Honorary bearers will be John Harjo, Joey Harjo, Mike Harjo, Jeremy Harjo, Derek Harjo, Joseph Harjo, Barney Leader and Jacob Harjo.
