Loretta Smith

Loretta Faye (Phillips) Smith, longtime Maud, Oklahoma resident brought to a close 95 years of a life well lived on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Pioneer Nursing Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.  She was born March 17, 1921 in Snomac, Oklahoma (community south of Seminole), to parents John Calvin Phillips and Emma Lee (Redding) Phillips. On March 19, 1948 Loretta married Andrew Ernest “Humpy” Smith in Gainesville, Texas.  The couple made their home in Maud where “Humpy” worked in the oilfield and then as a barber for many years and Loretta wore many hats, being a constant caregiver.  She worked at George’s Café’ in Maud and for Van and Erma Guinn at Van’s Café’.  Loretta was a babysitter to many children in the Maud area.  She worked as a Nurses Aid for many years at Sunset Estates Nursing Home in Maud.  Loretta also did clothes ironing for several families. Loretta absolutely loved children and taking care of others unconditionally.  She would always put others needs before her own.  Sadly, a little over 10 years ago Loretta was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease which slowly took her memory.  The family is so grateful to their extended family at Pioneer Nursing Home, where Loretta has been a resident for the past 10 years.  The staff and residents went above and beyond to care for Loretta and her family, words cannot express their gratitude. Loretta leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Sheila Faye Bates McConnell and her husband, Bobby of Maud, Oklahoma, one granddaughter, Kim Dawn (Bates) Nickell of Maud, Oklahoma, one grandson, Gerald “Patrick” Bates and his wife, Leslie of Maud, Oklahoma, one brother, Robert Phillips and his wife, Elva of Seminole, Oklahoma, sister-in-law, Norma Jean Phillips of Shawnee, Oklahoma, sister-in-law, Mary Caudle of Shawnee, Oklahoma, brother-in-law, Coy Smith and his wife Inga of Guthrie, Oklahoma, five great-grandchildren, Chris Impson, Michael Schultz, Tyson Schultz, Charity Nickell, Isabella Ramires, by her extended family at Pioneer Nursing Home and by a host of other family and dear friends. Loretta was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, Andrew “Humpy” Smith who died June 10, 1990, by four brothers, Marshall Phillips, Clifton Phillips, Wayne “Snuffy” Phillips, Jackie Phillips, and by two sisters, Lena Estep and Betty Hodge. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 11, 2016 at Trinity Baptist Church in Maud, Oklahoma with Glenn Williams officiating the service.  Interment will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, Oklahoma. Casket Bearers will be, John Brewer, Robert Rodriguez, Dylan Thomas, Michael Schultz, Waylon Hooker, and Sammy Young Jr. Honorary Bearers will be, Robert Phillips, Tony Caudle, Coy Smith, and Willie Hooker. Services are under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home in Maud, Oklahoma (Phone 405-374-2424).
