Kay Lemons

October 30, 1934 — October 16, 2016

Vera Kathleen "Kay" Lemons has gone home to be with the Lord. Kay was born to Constance "Connie" Evanhoe on October 30th, 1934 in Wichita, KS.  Kay was adopted by Connie's brother Carl Alfonso Evanhoe and his wife Lois Marie Meredith.  Kay grew up in Ralston, OK on the Evanhoe family farm. Kay attended OSU where she met and married her first husband and the father of her children Marta and Meredith. Kay moved to Bogota, Colombia to live with her husband and his family.  In Colombia she learned Spanish, which would become a life-long passion and eventually led to a career teaching foreign language.  Kay returned to Pawnee Oklahoma where she worked for the County Commissioner's  office.  While living in Pawnee, she met George Lemons, who was a coach for Pawnee High School. They married on March 31st, 1963. Kay and George joined their families, George's son Steve and daughter Lisa became Marta and Meredith's new siblings.  Over the next six years, Laura, Stephanie, Sean and Barbara were born. From 1963 to 1975 Kay was a stay at home mom to her eight children and many of the neighborhood children. Her house was always full, noisy and chaotic, but all were welcome.  Kay completed her Bachelor's Degree from East Central University in 1978. She went on to teach Spanish at Calvin High School from 1978 to 1980 and then Spanish and French at Seminole High School from 1980 to her retirement in 1998. Kay was an active member of her local altar society and volunteered at the Catholic Church in Maud, OK for many years.  Despite her many health issues, she was a survivor,  she overcame her share of hurdles, and then some. Kay lived a good life, facing her challenges with a rare good grace that was an inspiration to all who knew her.  Sadly, in recent years Kay developed heart disease and it was this final challenge that overwhelmed her body, but never her spirit and grace.  She passed in her sleep October, 15th 2016.  Kay was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Marta Lemons Casteel, grandchild Billie Dawn Elrod and great grandchild Peyton Neyman. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, George Lemons, her children Steve Lemons, Lisa Lemons Elrod, Meredith Lemons Lynn, Laura Lemons, Stephanie Lemons, Sean Lemons, Barbara Lemons and 29 grand and great grand children.  Services will be held 11:00 am Friday October 21st and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Seminole, OK.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that in the spirit of Kay's generosity, please make a donation to one of the following: Disabled American Veterans, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or St. Joseph's Indian School at P.O.
