Karen Smith-McCullar, 67, longtime Seminole resident died Sunday, July 27, 2014 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Karen was born September 22, 1946 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Virginia Lee (Sullivan) and Dorsey Dohn Crouse. Karen was raised by her grandparents, Warren and Jennie Sullivan, who lived in the Saint Louis, Oklahoma area and she attended schools in the area. She later received her college degree in Business from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma. Karen worked for the State of Oklahoma for many years as a computer programmer at the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation, Department of Finance, Department of Transportation, as a computer programmer, and at Griffin Memorial Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma. After her retirement with the state of Oklahoma, she worked for Hertz Car Rental, Fleming Foods, and later for Eastern Hills Hospice and May’s Hospice as a Chaplain. She was also currently an instructor at Seminole State College in Computer Science and Accounting. Karen loved to help people. She was a member of the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church of God in Seminole. Karen was a loving mother to her children, she also loved her church and traveling. Karen was a pianist and loved to sing. Her and her late husband, Don Smith pioneered, Westside Baptist Church in Seminole, Oklahoma, they were known as, “The Singing Smith Family," Karen also loved to play gospel music with her late husband Olen McCullar. The couple enjoyed playing at area nursing homes for patients. Karen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Brandon and Leigh Anne Smith of Seminole, Oklahoma , her daughter and son-in-law, LaDonna and Rusty McAlvain of Seminole, Oklahoma; her sister, Jana Blalock of Shawnee, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Chad McAlvain, Paige McAlvain, Korbin Scott and Taevyn Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, Warren and Jennie Sullivan, her first husband, Don G. Smith; her second husband, Olen McCullar; and a sister Charlene Kemper. Funeral services are planned for 2:00 P.M., Friday, August 1, 2014 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bruce Benson officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Saint Louis, Oklahoma. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
