Junior Mize

May 29, 1925 — July 18, 2011

Oscar Junior Mize, 86 passed away peacefully in his home July 18, 2011 after a six month illness.   Junior was born May 29, 1925 in Earlsboro to Oscar and Ora (Crutchfield) Mize. He was the middle child of six sons. Except for two and a half years in the service, Junior lived all his life in Earlsboro. Two months after his 18th birthday, Junior answered his call to duty during WW II by serving in the 172nd Army Infantry. Along with an honorable discharge, he earned a good conduct medal as well as a Philippine Liberation ribbon with one bronze star. Junior returned to Earlsboro from the Pacific Rim and soon began dating “the prettiest girl in Earlsboro.” He married Joy Jenkins in Fort Smith, Ar. on December 2, 1947. Two years later, he and Joy bought Jenkins Grocery from Joy’s parents thus establishing J&J Grocery. J&J Grocery expanded to include a feed store and gas station. J&J Grocery and Feed is still operating today after 61 years. Junior loved “the store” and often said he had the best customers in the world. All of his children and most of his grandchildren worked in the store at some point. Junior was also a retired letter carrier for the Earlsboro Post Office. In the 1980’s Junior was an elder at the Tecumseh Church of Christ. In recent years, he and Joy were members of the Seminole Church of Christ. In addition to working at the store or in the hay field, Junior loved visiting those who were unable to leave their home. For over a decade while in his 70’s, he held a Sunday morning service at the Sunset Estates Nursing Home. Last December Junior and Joy celebrated 63 years of marriage with a family dinner. Junior and Joy had five children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. One of his greatest pleasures was to have everyone together. On such occasions, he would often look around the roomful of family and say “This is all Memaw’s fault.” Junior was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Dale, Paul, Jim and Kelly. He is survived by his wife Joy of the home his children and their spouses: Jay and Debbie Mize of Earlsboro; Gail and Daryl Nash of Edmond; Monte and Simone Mize of Seminole; JoBeth and Howard Parsons of Earlsboro; and Ray Mize of Earlsboro; his grandchildren Crissy and John Smith of Edmond; Jeff Mize of Earlsboro; Kassy Mize of Earlsboro; Morgan Nash and Samuel Nash of Edmond; Jessica and Caleb Eddings of Earlsboro; Caiti Parsons and Montana Parsons of Earlsboro; His great-grandchildren: Summer, Jordan, Berek, and Kayson.
