John Glen Harris

September 21, 1929 — February 12, 2016

John Glen "Papa" Harris was born on September 21, 1929 in Weleetka, Oklahoma to John Luther Harris and Emily Catherine (Mainord) Harris.  On February 12, 2016 after 87 blessed years of life on this Earth, he moved into his brand new forever home in Heaven. Growing up in Seminole, Oklahoma, Glen had a deep love for his family. He and his two sisters were best buds and to say he was a Mama's boy would be an understatement.  Glen's passion for movies started at the movie theatre where he worked in Seminole. Betty still talks about him sitting in the reel room for hours turning movies and watching everyone driving down the strip.  At this time he had his eye on a beauty from Shawnee.  Glen often shared the story of the first time he saw Betty.  They were in the lunchroom at Seminole High School.  He looked across the room and saw the most beautiful green-eyed girl he had ever seen.  He told his buddy standing with him, "I'm going to marry that girl"...and so he did.  Betty and Glen married and they would spend the next 67 years by each other's side.  They eventually moved to Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and had two beautiful children, Vickie and David.  He began a long career in the oil business, moved to Oklahoma City, and eventually retired as President and CEO of Global Enterprises.  Glen and Betty have four grandchildren: Chace, Tiffani, Tara, and Paige.  They were the light of Papa's life. Fun and adventures with them became his top priorities.  He decided to travel anywhere his motorhome would take him.  He loved to go and see and do.  Annual trips to Disneyland and Las Vegas were made, as well as family vacations to Yellowstone Park, Niagara Falls, and Canada, just to name a few.  Glen taught his grandkids to ride dirt bikes and go-carts.  Being outside with them doing just about anything: swimming, ziplining across the backyard, riding horses, racing motorcycles was his greatest joy.  He could create something out of anything.  He built a three-story playhouse in the backyard that even included a kitchen sink and a fireman's pole.  He built a houseboat while his kids were growing up and as he got older he would take apart computers and put them back together just to try to understand how everything worked.  His curiosity and sense of adventure was an inspiration to everyone around him.  Glen's love of sports lasted his lifetime.  From playing just about every sport as a very young man, to chartering buses full of clients, family, and friends to OU football games, to having three TVs in his living room so that he wouldn't miss a game. He often would joke that the key to a happy marriage is one more TV.  Glen loved Christmas music, his puppies, his workshop in the backyard, mornings in the back porch swing with Betty, reading his Bible, telling stories, and watching old movies.  However, most of all he loved his family and had the greatest love of all for God.  He always said that he still had so many questions for the Lord...he just couldn't quite get it all figured out. Although his family will miss Papa every minute, they are happy he is finally getting some answers to those very important questions.  He left everyone close to him with enough love, examples of living, and Godly wisdom that he will remain forever in their hearts. Glen was preceded in death by his parents, John Luther Harris and Emily Catherine (Mainord) Harris; his two sisters, Linda Parkhurst and Ginnia Vee White; and his niece, Sue White.  He is survived by his wife, Betty Harris; his children, Vickie Shuler and David Harris; his grandchildren, Chace Shuler, Tiffani Shuler, Tara Shuler, and Paige Harris; his niece, Danaglee Dill; and his nephew, Lee White.
