Jerry Lee Nelson, 71 year old Maud, Oklahoma resident passed from this life on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at his home in Maud surrounded by his loving family.  He was born December 11, 1942 in Salina, Oklahoma to parents Audie Lee Nelson and Ina Lavida (Crawley) Nelson. Jerry grew up in Ada, Oklahoma where he graduated from Ada High School in 1960. On October 21st, 1981 Jerry married Nickie Thompson in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Jerry owned and operated the Maud Nursing Home for several years.  While at the same time he was a very active horse trainer.  He had won several horse races throughout Oklahoma and surrounding states.  Jerry had served as the Commissioner for the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission.  He was also a member of the Thoroughbred Association.  Jerry love to raise cattle and later in life he worked as a manager for Wrangler Jean Company in Seminole until his retirement.  He was also of the Baptist faith. Jerry leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of almost 33 years, Nickie (Thompson) Nelson.  His mother, Ina Castleberry of Ada, Oklahoma. One son, Jerry Lee “Jay” Nelson and his wife Terri of Maud, Oklahoma.  One daughter, Jennifer Fosler and her husband Steve of Snyder, Oklahoma.  Two step-sons, Frank D. Hopkins and his wife Mandy of Maud, Oklahoma, Nicholas B. Hopkins and his wife Jennifer of College Station, Texas. One brother, Dewayne Nelson and his wife Sheryl of San Antonio, Texas.  One sister, Pam Scroggins and her husband Tim of Francis, Oklahoma. Ten grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of other family and dear friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his father, Audie Lee Nelson and by one sister, Deanna Nelson Hurst. Honorary Bearers will be: Gene Cole, Bob Miller, Furman Huff and Shawn Wofford. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Heartland Hospice for their outstanding care. Jerry is precede in death by his father, Audie Lee Nelson and by one sister, Deanna Nelson Hurst. Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 10, 2014 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma with Chaplain Darrell Witten officiating the service. Cremation services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
