Janet Elaine "Jan" Wantland

Janet Elaine “Jan" Wantland, 76, Seminole resident since 1999, died August 17, 2017, in Seminole, Oklahoma. She was born February 27, 1941, in Sterling, Illinois to Orville Wylie and Clara Edith (Grater) Mathew. She grew up in Round Grove, Illinois on a farm until 1957 when she graduated from Morrison High School. She then married and raised five boys and attended Sauk Valley Community College, graduating with honors in 1975 and receiving an Associate Degree in Science. In 1974 she was named Student of the Year. Jan was a dedicated special education teacher in Illinois and later in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. She married William Charles Wantland, the love of her life, on May 25, 1985, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He survives her. She is also survived by her sons, Timothy Alan Myers of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Scott David Myers and his wife, Jill of LA Porte, Indiana; Craig Myers of Seminole, Oklahoma, DuWayne Robert Myers and Nan of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; Shawn Patrick Myers and his wife Teri of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; children by marriage; Timothy Doyal Wantland and his wife Melinda of Claremore, Oklahoma; Malia Katherine Bennett and her husband Steve of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Thomas Ken Wantland and his wife Christine of Roswell, New Mexico. She is also survived by grandchildren; Timothy Alan, Jr., Akeisha, Meagan, Troy, Molly, Lucas, Joseph, Mason, Russell, Ashley, Keenan, Kylie, Russell, Cass, Watson, Christopher, Laura, Rachel, John, Caty, Cara, Chelsea, Courtney, Samuel, Candice, and Cecilia and nine great grandchildren, her brother Gerald Wylie Mathew, brother-in-law Ronald Johnson, sister-in-law, Ronnette Mathew and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers; Hubert William Mathew and James Orville Mathew, sisters; Marjorie Alice Johnson and Eleanor June Schneider, sisters-in-law; Mildred Mathew, Patricia Mathew, brother-in-law; Charles Lewis Schneider, special nephew Philip Mathew Schneider and special niece Katherine Louise Mathew. Jan enjoyed playing bridge and singing in different groups while living in Wisconsin. After she married Bishop Wantland, she spent her time raising son Shawn and sharing her husband’s ministry. All of Jan and Bill’s children would come back (as they would say) to regroup or attend the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire. After moving to Seminole, Jan was a member of the Anglican Church of North America, where she and her husband had a chapel in their home. She was an active clergy wife of the Diocese of Fort Worth. In Seminole, she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the Pink Ladies at the hospital, Creative Woman Red Hatters and the Tuesday Afternoon Bible Study. Jan also loved to garden, travel, entertain, and she counted God, her family and friends as most important in her life. One of her highlights in life was to be presented to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip and to visit with Princess Diana at Buckingham Palace in 1988. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma, with Father Dale Klitzke officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Illinois and Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 230 East Ohio St., Suite 500, Chicago, Illinois 60611.
