Homer Bergen

October 17, 1928 — January 2, 2018

Homer Marvin Bergen, 89 year old former Maud, Oklahoma resident, passed from this life to everlasting life on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.  He was born October 17, 1928 in Hinton, Oklahoma to parents Allie Lou Cindy (Brooks) Bergen and Ivan Williamson Bergen. Homer began working at a very early age with his parents who farmed in Hinton, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1952 where he earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. On May 18, 1957 Homer married the love of his life, Virginia Lee McCarty in Midwest City, Oklahoma.  The couple had two daughters, Donna and Cindy Bergen. In 1972 Homer moved his family from Del City, Oklahoma to a 40 acre farm just south of Maud, Oklahoma.  Homer later retired from Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, Oklahoma and sold the farm and moved into town. Homer and his family were very active in the Saint Louis First Baptist Church in Saint Louis, Oklahoma.  Homer served the Lord in many ways from teaching Sunday School Classes, to driving the Church bus and making sure to have plenty of candy to hand out. Following his retirement Homer didn’t sit idle and began driving a bus for Maud Public Schools. He also worked as Maintenance Director for Seminole Municipal Hospital.  In his down time you could often find him tinkering in the garage, working in the yard or reading his Bible. Homer and his wife Virginia raised their daughters and eventually moved to Tecumseh, Oklahoma. The couple started attending Wallace Avenue Baptist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  Sadly in 2016 his daughter, Donna Bergen, passed away at the age of 52 on May 11th. Six months later his loving wife of 60 years, Virginia passed away on December 13th. Homer leaves to cherish his legacy, one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and B.J. Guinn of Shawnee, Oklahoma; one brother and sister-in-law, Edgar Bergen and his wife Chris of Choctaw, Oklahoma; one sister and brother-in-law, Eva Lou Cox and her husband Leroy of Norman, Oklahoma; one brother-in-law, Bob McCarty of Maud, Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren, Jessica Pospisil and her husband Jeremiah, Jarrett Guinn and his wife Randi, Miranda Groves and her husband K.C., Zach Cheatham and Daniel Cheatham; 12 great-grandchildren, Colten White, Tynslee White, Kahle Groves, Bob Groves, Adelene Cheatham, Jett Novotny, Phoenix Novotny, Drew Guinn, Asher Guinn, Emmy Guinn, Peyten Bartholomew and Evan Barholomew; Homer is also survived by a host of other family and dear friends. Homer is preceded in death by his parents, by his wife Virginia, by one daughter Donna Bergen and by one sister Stella McCannon. A prayer will be held at Swearingen Funeral Home on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. led by Pastor Butch Bradley and Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Shawnee, Oklahoma where Homer will be laid to rest by his wife Virginia.
