Harlan Whitlock

Harlan Junior Whitlock Harlan Junior Whitlock, 84, longtime Seminole resident died Wednesday, June 2, 2010 in Seminole. Harlan was born December 18, 1925 at Wewoka, Oklahoma to Charley and Sarah Jane (Smith) Whitlock. Harlan grew up in Wewoka before entering the U.S. Army at age 18. Harlan was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he was a Private First Class. His distinguished service record earned him a “Purple Heart and a Bronze Star”. He served in the 2nd infantry and his company of 177 soldiers served in the “Battle of the Bulge”.  Harlan was one of 8 men that were left standing after the battle; the rest either died in battle or were captured. He also was a judo expert and a sniper during the war. Harlan in his younger years work in the Seminole oilfields and later went to work as a Mechanic for Wonder Bread in Seminole.  Retiring in 1983 after 23 years with the company. In 1960, Harlan committed his life to the Lord and for 50 years he served his Lord and church faithfully. Harlan was a member of the New Life Church in Wewoka where he served as a deacon and youth leader. When Sunday morning came around he wanted to be and usually was in church even during the last days of his life he was in church. He was also a graduate of Seminole High School. Harlan loved his family and gave all of them nick names. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. His favorite pastime was to go fishing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harlan always looked forward to the holidays when all of his family gathered together to celebrate with food, games and much laughter. He was also a hat collector. Harlan married Geneva Pearl (Gentry) Whitlock on June 1, 1947 in Newcastle, Texas. Harlan is survived by his wife of 63 years Geneva Whitlock of Seminole. A son Larry Whitlock and his wife Sharon of Seminole, daughter Sherry Barrett and her husband Mike of Seminole.  He is also survived by three grandchildren, Larry Whitlock, Jr. and wife Tracy, Jimmy Whitlock and Finance’ Sommer Newman and Kerry Peters and husband Jason and six great grandchildren. His parents, J.C. Whitlock, Edgar Cooley Whitlock, Russell Whitlock, Earnest Whitlock, Lucille Spence, Edna Carroll and Lona Elkins, preceded him in death.   Funeral services will be held, 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 7, 2010 at the New Life Church in Wewoka, Oklahoma with Rev. Tom Azlin officiating and assisted by Freeman Whitlock. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka, Oklahoma.   Casket Bearers will be Larry Whitlock, Jr., Jimmy Fred Whitlock, Jason Peters, Jimmy Dale Whitlock, David Riddle and Roy Sisco. Honorary bearers will be his great grandchildren: Caleb Peters, Whitney Peters, Kennedy Whitlock, Landon Whitlock, Tyler Whitlock, Chance Newman and Reece Hodges.
