Haney Atyia

December 23, 1927 — May 3, 2020

Haney Atyia was born December 23, 1927 in Holdenville, Oklahoma to Mr. & Mrs. Shaheen (Nellie Hill) Atyia, and passed from this life on May 3, 2020 in Shawnee, Oklahoma at the age of 92.

At an early age, Haney and his parents moved to Seminole, Oklahoma where he grew up in a loving home with his 9 siblings. He graduated from Seminole High School in 1945. While in high school he was an active member of the chieftain football and basketball teams. He also played on a men's s...oftball league and was invited to try out for the Chicago Cubs. During his senior year, he worked at the Seminole Fire Department as their youngest fire fighter. Oklahoma A&M College taught firefighting courses and workshops. At 18, he had taken and passed more of these courses than anyone else his age in Oklahoma. Also, at this age, he started helping to construct the golf course in Seminole. First, weeds had to be cut, the land cleared, then he began working on building the greens.

After high school, he attended OBU before being drafted and served in the Navy during WWII. He was stationed in China on a large ship named, "The Benevolence". He received the Victory Medal.

Upon returning home, he married Deloris "Poppy" Harris Atyia and they soon moved to Texas where he worked for Jones & Laughlin Pipe & Supply for many years. Haney and Poppy were blessed with two sons, Joe Hammett Atyia and Donald Glen Atyia. They made their home in Midland, Texas for several years. Later in life he married Sonia Atyia.

Haney loved all types of sports and was an avid golfer. He was a long-time member of the country club in Midland and participated and won many tournaments as well as making a "hole in one" three times in his golfing career.

He was owner of Haney Pipe & Supply before retiring and moving to New Braunfels,Texas. While in New Braunfels he was an active member of Canyon Lake First Baptist Church.

Mr. Atyia was very proud of his Lebanese heritage. He was a kind and generous man who never met a stranger. Living life to the fullest, he was always the life of the party.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his eldest son Joe Atyia, two brothers, Johnny Brown and Hammett Atyia, three sisters, Betty Atyia, Norma Murray and Zekeah Pease.

He is survived by his wife Sonia Atyia of New Braunfels, Texas, his son, Donald Glen Atyia and wife Janet of Lead, South Dakota, step son, Drake Bellomy and wife Arlene of New Braunfels, Texas. Brothers and wives, Freid and Pat Atyia, Doug and Judy Atyia of Seminole, sisters, Shirlene Pratka and Jo Ann Howell of Prague, Oklahoma, Dale Pease of Dallas, Texas, three step-grandchildren of New Braunfels, plus many nieces and nephews who dearly loved and admired the patriarch of the Atyia Family.

Graveside services were conducted by Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole, Oklahoma.
