Grayson Lane Atchison

July 7, 1943 — April 24, 2020

Grayson Lane Atchison, age 76, longtime Seminole, Oklahoma resident, passed away April 24, 2020 in Midwest City, Oklahoma. He was born July 7, 1943 to John Paris Atchison and Sara Jane (Flud) Atchison in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Later he was joined by two brothers, Richard Atchison and Robert Atchison. The family lived in California for some time and then returned to Oklahoma, settling in Seminole. Grayson served in the United States Air force during the Vietnam Era, serving as a medic. Serving others was one of the objectives in Grayson’s life. He also was a writer. He had a collection of very enjoyable short stories that have not been published. He was very interesting to talk to due to his great sense of humor and his habit of being an avid reader. His home testified to this by his elaborate collection of books. He was on the Seminole Public Library Board for a time. He initiated the Adult Literacy Program at the library and participated in events held at the library. You could find Grayson volunteering when there was a need, such as distributing food at a food bank. Grayson was a Mason and a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed his office in his home that he organized in a way that kept his work time efficient. He loved interesting quotes and had many posted in his home. Grayson collected Holy Bibles to be distributed in our community. One Bible recently went to a little boy that was hospitalized. One church had benefited by putting his donations in the foyer of the church for people to claim for their own. Grayson did not want credit for this, but it is part of his life story. If you received a free used Bible, it most likely came from Grayson. Grayson will be missed in Seminole. He had close friends that valued their friendship with him. Those who knew him will remember his humorous expressions and the stories he told. Those who didn’t know him may miss a community volunteer that was there when we needed him. Grayson attended the First United Methodist Church in Seminole. After being told his illness was terminal, he made the statement, “100 years from now it won’t make a difference anyway”. He was wrong, his service in life will have a trickle-down effect. Passing out Bibles can make an eternal difference. Thank you, Grayson for your service both in the military and our community of Seminole. Services for Grayson are planned for a later date due to COVID19. Arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma. Funeral Information: May 6, 2020, 8:00 AM Swearingen Funeral Home located at 1001 N. Milt Phillips Avenue, Seminole, OK 74868
