Glen Edward Kernell

Glen Edward Kernell, Sr. 65, passed away Tuesday April 3rd, 2012 in Oklahoma City.  He was born January 23rd, 1947 in Claremore, OK. to Simeon James and Amelia (Cully) Kernell. Glen was a long time resident of Oklahoma City and grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  He was a 1965 graduate of Dale High School and a gifted baseball player for Dale. He went on to play for Murray State College in Tishomingo. Glen was an avid coach of women’s basketball and softball, having won numerous state championships and trophies throughout the state of Oklahoma. He began coaching the OKC Rebels softball team in 1973 after assisting long time Head Coach Amos Harjo for several years.  Glen went on to coach the Rebels for the next three decades.  Glen made numerous friends and relationships throughout the Native softball and basketball world, all of these relationships he treasured dearly.  He loved OU athletics especially football, and never missed a game either by television or by listening to Bob Barry, Sr. on KOMA.  Glen was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He was also an avid New York Yankees fan, even while his son Chebon was a fan of the Boston Red Sox. This lead to many numerous heated conversations and even arguments about Red Sox clothing being worn in his house.  Glen enjoyed his oldest daughter Christie’s love and care over the past several years and particularly enjoyed her fried chicken and fried potatoes that she often cooked for dinner.  He also cherished his relationship with his baby Rae, whom he loved to watch play softball, having taken her to Tushkahoma, Creek Nation and every tournament in Oklahoma.  He enjoyed watching Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies with his grandson Josiah, over and over again.  He enjoyed watching his granddaughter Kaycee play basketball and excel on the court.  He also loved watching his other granddaughter, Raylen dance and enjoyed hearing her order his un-sweet tea with lemon from Sonic. Glen was a long time member of Billy Hooton Memorial United Methodist Church of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference.  He served as trustee, treasurer, chair of administrative board, and was often elected as delegate to the Annual Conference, having served faithfully in the heat of the day and through long debates, until 2010. Glen's favorite scripture is Psalm 121, where it speaks of God being our refuge. Glen loved to torment his brothers and sister, even until just the other day.  Glen married Janice Wolf on October 31st, 1970 in Oklahoma City.  They celebrated over forty years of marriage together. Glen is survived by his wife Janice Kernell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one son Rev. Glen “Chebon” Edward Kernell, Jr. and his wife Sara Kernell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two daughters Christie Kernell  and Gwendolyn Rae Kernell both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is also survived by a sister Norma Jean Hopkins of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two brothers Rocky Kernell of Shawnee, Oklahoma and Roger Kernell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Glen is also survived by his three grandchildren Kaycee Kernell, Josiah Kernell and Raylen Kernell. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Cecil Kernell and Simeon James Kernell, Jr. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 P.M., Friday April 6, 2011 at Hitchitee Indian United Methodist Church, northeast of Seminole, Oklahoma with burial at the Kernell Family Cemetery west of Seminole, Oklahoma. Rev. Alvin Deere and Samuel Battiest will officiate at the service. There will be a wake service at 7:00 P.M., Thursday April 5, 2012 at the Hitchitee Indian United Methodist Church. Casket bearers will be Greg Kernell, Jayson Kernell, Aaron Kernell, Anthony Kernell, Mekko Wolf, Joe Pewo. Honorary bearers will be Richard Davis and Louis Fife.
