George Buford Hughes

George Buford Hughes , age 78 and a resident of Asher, Oklahoma, passed away March 8, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 13, 2023 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel of Konawa, Oklahoma.  Mike Johnson and Jack Thompson will officiate, and burial will follow at Avoca Cemetery near Asher.  Casket bearers are Scott Hughes, Todd Hughes, Jack Thompson, Booper Thompson, Ricky Thompson, and Justin Thompson.  Honorary bearer is Zane Hughes.

George was born November 17, 1944 at home in Macomb, Oklahoma to William Alberta “Bill” Hughes and Mable L. (Waldrupe) Hughes. He attended Macomb school for ten and one half years without missing a day of school.  Then, they moved to Asher, Oklahoma.  He was drafted into the Army in 1965 and was stationed in Korea for thirteen months during the Vietnam Conflict and became Sergeant.  He came back home March 5, 1967 to marry the love of his life, Nancy Arlean Thompson.  He married Nancy on March 25, 1967 in Wanette, Oklahoma.  They would have been married fifty-six years this month.  George started his own business, G&N Tubing Crew Service, and he worked for Bodard Drilling Company and Blue Bonnet Oil Company for over thirty years.  To put it mildly, he worked all of his life in the oilfield.  George and Nancy bought a farm in Asher in 1971 and have lived there until now.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Hughes of the home; two sons, Scott Hughes of Asher and Todd Hughes and wife, Kendra of Asher; one daughter, Teri Timms and husband, Glen of Asher; nine grandchildren, Kimberly Stilly, Carson, Raina, Owen, Maggie, Mattie, Kendall, Zane, and Kaylin; one great grandson, Carter; and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mable Hughes; one sister, Remona Bourne; and one brother, Doyle Hughes.
