Eugene Dave O'Dell

Eugene Dave “Sonny” O’Dell, Jr, age 76 and a resident of Asher, Oklahoma, passed away at his home surrounded by family and friends on Monday, February 26, 2018. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Assembly of God Church in Konawa under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa.  Pastor Steve Lowrance will officiate and burial will follow at Vista Cemetery, west of Konawa.  Casket bearers are Andrew Bell, John Bell, Seth Bell, Jacob Lee, Jettson Lee, Jared Basinger, Larry Odell, and Brett Odell.  Honorary bearers are Eck Goodrich, Max Courtney, Dick Lightfoot, LeRoy Odell, Tim Odell, Paul Allen, and Robert Gladden.  The family will receive guests Friday, March 2nd at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sonny was born June 12, 1941 in Byars, Oklahoma to Eugene Dave Odell, Sr. and Valeta (Stehr) Odell.  He graduated from Asher High School and proudly served in the 45th Aviation Division of the National Guard.  He married Karen Deonn Patterson on December 17, 1960 in Konawa.  He was a Branch Manager for Georgia Pacific Lumber Corporation for thirty-two years and a member of the Assembly of God Church in Konawa.  He was a cowboy by heart, and considered himself a rancher. He also loved hunting, fishing, and raising horses and cattle.  Sonny also enjoyed water and snow skiing, golfing, coaching baseball and basketball.  Most of all, he loved going to his grandchildren’s events. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Karen O’Dell of the home; one son, Jeffrey Lane O’Dell of  Haslet, Texas; two daughters, Denise Renee Bell and husband, Kevin of Weatherford, Texas, and Gina Deonn Lee and husband, William of Azle, Texas; one brother, LeRoy Odell and wife, Karen of Byars, Oklahoma; one sister, Peggy Allen and husband, Paul of Asher, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, Andrew Bell and spouse, Azzama, Haylee Basinger and spouse, Jared, John Bell, Seth Bell, Lakin O’Dell, Jaxie O’Dell, Oakley O’Dell, Miley O’Dell, Jacob Lee, and Jettson Lee; and two great grandchildren, Cutter Basinger, and Dally Basinger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Valeta Odell; one brother, Larry Odell; one sister, Eileen Gladden; and two children that Sonny’s parents raised, Rita Fry and Gwen Ann Baker.
