Ernest Herbert Buchanan passed away quietly on August 16, 2008 at the age of 82. Ernest was born in Dibble, Oklahoma on December 7, 1925 to William M. and Emma Mae Berry Buchanan and attended Summers Chapel School. rnrnHe joined the Navy in 1944 at the age of 19 and was assigned to the USS Shasta, an ammunitions ship. The USS Shasta was engaged in several battles including Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Honshoe. She was headed to Pearl Harbor on December 2, 1944 but did not arrive until December 14 after the bombing. Ernest was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Oklahoma. rnrnErnest went on a blind date with Lena Mae Ashby set up by her sister Faye and her boyfriend Bedell Wylie, also a friend of Ernest?s. Ernest and Lena Mae were married on May 18, 1948 in Purcell, Oklahoma and made their home in Bowlegs before moving to their farm in 1975. They had four children, a son Herbert, and three daughters, Linda, Anita and Sandra. rnrnErnest worked as a mechanic at Harmel Motors and Norton Ramsey Chevrolet in Seminole until he retired and began farming full time. He enjoyed running his dozer and raising cattle, working long hours keeping both operating smoothly. He served on the Bowlegs Board of Education for ten years, was an active member of the Wolf Security Patrol, and member of the Oklahoma Cattlemen?s Association. rnrnErnest was preceded in death by his wife Lena Mae of 49 years, six brothers, two sisters and his parents. rnrn Ernest is survived by his children, son Herbert and Kelley Buchanan of Maud, daughters Linda Ross and Charles Ray Troglin of Bowlegs, Anita and David Adams of Maud, and Sandra Buchanan of Berryville, Arkansas. Ernest was very proud of his grandchildren, Lori and Randy Lehman, Lisa and Mike Brown, Tammy and Eric Douthit, Stephanie Adams, Sarah Adams, Christian Adams, Brian and Jesi O?Daniel, Brett and Danielle O?Daniel, and Lesley O?Daniel as well as his 13 great grandchildren, Cody, Chance, Garrett, Daria, Turner, Levi, Cashe, Casey, Tyler, Ryan, Ty, Isabelle and Telissa. Two brothers, Berry ?Buck? and Betty Buchanan, Floyd Doris and Susie Buchanan, and sister Ethyl and Skip Lambright, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews also survived Ernest. rnrnFuneral services will be at 10:30am, Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home. Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate.
