Elva E. (Merriman) Phillips

Elva E. (Merriman) Phillips, 85 year old lifelong Seminole, Oklahoma resident passed from this life on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at Norman Regional Hospital.  She was born March 7, 1932 in Wewoka, Oklahoma to parents Shird Curtis Merriman and Lucy Pearl (Winkles) Merriman. Elva attended both Lime Stone Public School and Wewoka Public School. On December 4, 1950 she married, Robert “Red” Phillips in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. Elva was a homemaker and a member of the Congregational Methodist Church on Goodhope Road in Seminole, where she was famous for her fried pies. Elva was an excellent seamstress and she had made quilts for all of her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.  She also loved to garden. Survivors include her husband of almost 67 years, Robert “Red” Phillips of the home; three sons, Terry Don Phillips of Sasakwa, Oklahoma, “Bobby” Ray Phillips and his wife Sharlene of Seminole, Oklahoma, Jimmy “Keith” Phillips of Seminole, Oklahoma; one daughter, Pamela Burnett of Seminole, Oklahoma; two brothers, Earl “Dean” Merriman of Casitas Springs, California, Doyle “Gene” Merriman of Las Vegas, Nevada; 7 grandchildren, Heather Perryman, Tim Earnest, Leslie Burdine, Lyndsey Abel, Jaime Kirby, Jeremy Phillips, Josh Phillips; 12 great-grandchildren, Jax Williams, Kole Williams, Canaan Abel, Isley Abel, Johnathan Dominique, Alyssa Burdine, Braydon Burdine, Alexis Dominique, Colton Phillips, Hayden Phillips, Waylon Phillips and Mia Kirby; and a host of other family and dear friends. Elva was preceded in death by her parents, Shird Curtis Merriman and Lucy Pearl (Winkles) Merriman; 4 brothers, Carl Lee Merriman, Wayne Merriman, Arlen Merriman and by one infant brother; by 5 sisters, Claretta Norman, Vada Norman, Dorothy Johnson, Evelyn Elliott, and Mildred Lancaster. Funeral Services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma with Pastor Dwaine Jackson officiating the service.  Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole, Oklahoma. Casket Bearers will be: Tim Earnest, Matt Abel, Jaymn Burdine, Josh Phillips, Jeremy Phillips and Jax Williams. Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
