Edward “Leon” Branscum, age 89 and a long-time resident of Konawa, Oklahoma, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019 at Norman Regional Health System. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa with military honors. Rev. Bruce Sanders and Rev. Adam Dyess will officiate and burial will follow at Vamoosa Cemetery. Casket bearers are Michael Branscum, Stephen Branscum, Jared Branscum, Mark Branscum, Roy Snelson, and Noah Carr. Honorary bearers are Josh Branscum, Daniel Branscum, Nathan Laughlin, Dustin Plumlee, Eric Gibson, and Aaron Brooks. Leon was born August 23, 1929, in Konawa to Cassie McKinley Branscum and Tezzie Jane (Williams) Branscum. After graduating high school, he proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the Army. He received the Army Occupation Medal (Japan) and the Korean Service Medal along with the UN Service Medal of Combat Infantry Badge. He married Emily Jean Owen February 6, 1953 in Konawa. He loved God, and he served as deacon at the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church of Konawa and presently at Grace Missionary Baptist Church in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He managed the Konawa Lumber Company and later worked for Brown and Root Construction as warehouseman for twenty-five years until his retirement. He also served as a long-time Konawa School Board member. He loved his family, and he loved coin collecting and his dog, “Buddy”. He is survived by five sons, Ronnie Branscum and wife, Gayla of Konawa, Charles Branscum and wife, Iris of Stillwater, Oklahoma, Randy Branscum and wife, Leona of Elmendorf, Texas, Jerry Branscum and wife, Tammy of Byng, Oklahoma, and Jim Branscum and wife, Pam of Calera, Oklahoma; one daughter-in-law, Brenda Branscum of Ponca City, Oklahoma; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cassie and Tezzie Branscum; wife, Emily Jean Branscum in 2005; one son, Gene Branscum, three brothers, J.E., Arlton, and Donnie Branscum; and one sister, Mildred Price.
