Edmond Andrew Harjo, 96, Maud resident died, Monday March 31, 2014 in Ada, Oklahoma at Mercy Hospital of Ada. Edmond was born on November 24, 1917 in Maud, Oklahoma to Yanna (Grant) and Tony Harjo. Mr. Harjo had lived in the Maud and Seminole areas all his life. He was a longtime member of the Achena Presbyterian Church in Maud, Oklahoma, where he was a church elder and officer. He was a schoolteacher most of his life and taught at Maud Schools, Justice Schools and Pickett Center. Mr. Harjo was also a concert pianist. Mr. Harjo served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II; he was a private first class and a Seminole Nation Code Talker, during the war, for which he received a Good Conduct Medal, EAME service Ribbon with one Silver Service Star, his unit was Battery “A” 195th Field Artillery Battalion. His nephew, Richard Harjo of Maud, Oklahoma and several other nieces and nephews survive him. Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M., Friday, April 4, 2014 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Dr. Eugene Wilson officiating and elders Frank Sewell, Lewis Fife and Rick Harjo assisting with the service. Burial will follow at Seminole Nation Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Seminole, Oklahoma. There will be a wake service on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole, Oklahoma. Casket bearers will be Frank Sewell, Charles Sewell, Eric Thocco, Kendall Roberts, Gary Roybal, Ferrall Smith and Shawn Harjo. Honorary bearers will be Ed Jojola, Ben Sewell, Chuck Sewell, Aaron Coker, Allen Aldridge, Joe Bruner, Marion Jones and Kelly Tiger, Jr. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
