Cpl. R. V. Leo Short

Korean War prisoner of war, Cpl. R. V. Leo Short, who was missing in action, will be brought home and be laid to rest on December 9, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at Wolf Cemetery with military honors.

Leo was born on September 23, 1931 to Owen E. Short and Winnie (Whitaker) Short.  At the age of 16, he enlisted in the United States Army National Guard on August 24, 1949 and trained at Ft. Sill.  He then went to Ft. Lewis, WA before being deployed to Korea in August 1950.  He served with George Company, 2nd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division.  Leo was awarded several awards to include a Purple Heart with one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, Prisoner of War Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Service Medal, Republic of Korea – Korean War Service Medal and Republic of Korea-Presidential Unit Citation.  Leo passed away on March 12, 1951 in Korea, at Kunu-ri/POW Camp 5, Pyoktong, (DPRK) at the age of 19.

Leo enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, hunting and swimming.

Leo is survived by his sister, UmiJean (Short) Nielsen and her husband, Don and brother, Charley Short; a host of nieces, nephews and many other family and friends.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Elwood Short, Collen Short, H.D. Short, Lavonna Short, L. B. Short, Owen L. Short and Con Short.
