Charles "Milton" Courtney , age 96, and a life-long resident of Konawa, Oklahoma, passed away February 18, 2022 at Ada Care Center in Ada, Oklahoma.
Funeral services with military honors are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa, Oklahoma. Rev. Pam Shirk will officiate, and burial will follow at Vamoosa Cemetery. Casket bearers are Charlie Courtney, Andrew Courtney, Darrel Walker, Marty Coffey, Stan Fixico, and Fletcher Hardy. Honorary bearers are David Courtney, Larry Fletcher, Terry Hawthorne, Jeff Hardy, Dusty Willige, and Scott McClenan. Viewing will be 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 21st at the funeral home in Konawa.
Milton was born October 9, 1925 in Konawa to Homer Wade Courtney and Estelle Sevilla (Anderson) Courtney. He graduated from Konawa High School in 1943, and he received a plaque for never missing a day of school from first grade through his senior year. After graduation, he proudly volunteered to serve in the Navy from October 1943 until May, 1946. Milton served as 2nd Class Petty Officer on the Battleship Iowa. He married Anna Louise Forbes June 12, 1950 at the First United Methodist Church in Konawa. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Konawa, and he owned the Konawa Hardware and Feed Store. Milton was also a member of the Konawa Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, and the American Legion, and he was the Konawa City Treasurer for over forty years. Milton was a Board Member of Central Oklahoma Family Medical Clinic in Konawa. He was the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2011 and in 2012. He loved to play tennis, watch marching bands, sing in the church choir, make jokes, and he loved history. Milton also loved to be involved in the community, and he especially loved being with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Louise Courtney of the home; one son, David Courtney and wife, Debbie of Chickasha, Oklahoma; two sons-in-law, Larry Fletcher of Muskogee, Oklahoma, and Terry Hawthorne of Midlothian, Texas; one sister, June Skaggs of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Amy Hardy and husband, Jeff, Cary McClenan and husband, Scott, Bethany Willige and husband, Dusty, Charlie Courtney, and Andrew Courtney and wife, Lauren; and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Estelle Courtney; two daughters, Mary Fletcher and Anita Hawthorne; one sister, Marie Bell and one brother, Ed Courtney.
