Billy Zane Rains

August 11, 1932 — December 17, 2016

Billy Zane Rains, age 84 and a resident of Konawa, Oklahoma passed away, Saturday, December 17, 2016 at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 20th at Vamoosa Cemetery under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa.  Mike Cox and Mitch Williams will officiate. Bill was born August 11, 1932 in Sasakwa, Oklahoma, to Willie R. and Eunice (Gaines) Rains.  He was the eldest of five siblings.  He graduated from Vamoosa High School and served from 1949 to 1956 in the Oklahoma National Guard.  He also served in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict during 1951-1952 with Company B, 180th Infantry Regiment, and the 45th Division Thunderbirds.  He earned the rank of Sergeant, First Class, and the decorations he received were Army of Occupation Medal (Japan), Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal (with a Bronze Star), and United Nations Service Medal. Bill was employed with William H. Pine Oil Company until 1959.  He received his diploma from the Oklahoma Barber College in Oklahoma City in August of 1960.  He was a Barber/Roffler stylist and owner of his own business.  He retired in 2004.  He was baptized at the age of twelve at First Baptist Church of Konawa where he was a member.  He and Mary Jo Starns exchanged wedding vows on June 17, 1956.  Bill’s community involvement included coaching Little League Baseball.  He was a member of the Konawa Chamber of Commerce, Treeing Walker Dog Breeders and Fanciers Association, lifetime membership in the 180th Infantry Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Disabled American Veterans, and American Legion Post #70.  He contributed to Sequoia Hospital Foundation (San Francisco Bay area) Redwood City, California, and St. Anthony Foundation in Oklahoma City. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mary Jo (Starns) Rains of the home; one son, Nick Z. Rains of Oklahoma City; one grandson, Justin M. Rains of Oklahoma City; two sisters, Jo Willene Spencer and husband, Vonis of Peridot, Arizona, and Velta Sue Powell of Tucson, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Eunice Rains; one brother, Don E. Rains, and one sister, Charlotte Ann Powell.
