Betty Doris Phillips was born on October 28, 1928 in Seminole, Oklahoma, to Temple Garrett and Auda Margaret (Swofford) Phillips. She married Walter Clark (“Dub”) Mills on October 24, 1959, in Seminole, Oklahoma. She was a long-time member of The Heights Baptist Church in San Angelo, Texas. Betty graduated from Varnum High School, near Seminole, in 1946. She played guard on the Varnum girls’ basketball team, priding herself on fierce defense. After graduation, she attended business college and became a legal secretary. Afterward, Betty worked as a clerk at Tinker Air Force Base for several years. She was known there for her hard work and skill and, for years afterward, enjoyed telling stories about her work and the friends and characters she worked with. When she married Dub, Betty moved to Texas and became a devoted wife and mother. She was quiet and soft spoken in public, but asserted herself boldly to protect her family. She taught the importance of honesty and integrity, expected your best, and believed in your potential. Most of all, Betty loved her family. Her ideal vacation was to return to Seminole with her family to visit her mother, sister, brother, and their families. She did this year after year, giving her children the gift of really knowing their grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins on both sides of the family. Betty is survived by her son, Rex Mills and his wife Rosanne of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Debra Powers and her husband Lan of Midland, Texas; two grandsons, Andrew and Peter Mills of Dallas, Texas; three granddaughters and their husbands, Jamie Blevins and Mike Die of Kyle, Texas, Tammy and D.J.
